Sheepmount Athletics Track and Playing Fields
Friday 19th August 2005 saw the eagerly awaited reopening of The Sheepmount Athletics Track and Playing Fields after £3.6 million of redevelopment works.
The project, which attracted £2 million of funding from Sport England and the Football Foundation, has created a fantastic athletics and football resource for Cumbria with major redevelopment’s made to key areas.
One of the main elements of the project has been the upgrading of the track from 6 to 8 lanes, enabling National League meetings to be held at the stadium for the first time. Local athletes will also benefit from a brand new gym and fitness room, in time for their crucial winter training.
The football pitches have been drained and reconfigured and a new clubhouse, referees office and refurbished changing rooms are all ready in time for the new football season for use by local and county football teams.
A new clubroom and a training and education room will also be available for clubs and teams to take advantage of.
The Sheepmount hosts a variety of sports organisations including 17 football clubs, 2 athletics clubs, other pitch sports and indoor rifle shooting and also plays host to a variety of major events and school activities. The new facilities are set to give a huge boost for sporting opportunities in the area. Carlisle Leisure Limited in partnership with Carlisle City Council will be holding a Community Festival of Sport in April 2006 to officially celebrate the reopening of the facility, with local youngsters and families being able to try their hand at a host of sports and events.
